Scenic Highway Rides and Drives

South Carolina's Most Scenic Routes

· Outdoor Adventure,Biking

Wake up with the sun, grab a steaming cup of coffee to go and take to the road for a morning ride you'll never forget. The popular scenic highway known as Moonshiner 28 is a stunning route that takes bikers up through the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina to the Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee. Though known for its reputation as a must-ride route for bikers, it's just as stunning from the seat of a car.

Along with admiring the many views, be sure to make stops along the way. There's a wide variety of dining options, whether you're in the mood for BBQ at The Smokin' Pig, baked goods at The Village Bakery and Cafe or American fare at the historical 1826 Bistro in Pendleton. If your tastebuds are in the mood for something more eccentric, check out Zen Ramen and Sushi Burrito or Yolk in Clemson.

As you continue your journey, be sure to stretch your legs with scenic strolls at any of the following town stops:

  • Pendleton town square
  • Denver Downs Farm
  • Downtown Walhalla
  • Yellow Branch Falls
  • Issaqueena Falls
  • Stumphouse Tunnel

Another scenic route is Highway 178 which goes through the South Carolina towns of Honea Path, Belton, Anderson, Liberty and Pickens. This road takes explores to the North Carolina mountains into towns like Rosman and Brevard, heading on to the stunning Blue Ridge Parkway. This road can also be used as an alternative route to the Tail of the Dragon, the Pisgah Forest, Hendersonville or Asheville.

Stop for a bite to eat at one of the many dining options these South Carolina towns have to offer:

If you can't decide where to eat, maybe pick a stop for an activity first. There's the Tennis Hall of Fame in Belton, the Anderson County Museum in Anderson, the town of Liberty, Hagood Mill or Sassafras Mountain in Pickens, or the Twin Falls in Pisgah National Forest.

Whether you ride or drive these scenic routes, be sure you take moments to slow down and appreciate the nature and beauty of it all.
